Visa Bets Trust Infrastructure, Not AI Features, Will Win Agentic Commerce
Visa Group president Oliver Jenkyn argues that the future of AI-powered commerce hinges on verified identities, not smarter algorithms. With the Trusted Agent Protocol, Agent Score, and a new directory, Visa is building the credential layer for a machine-driven economy.

Somewhere between a shopper typing a search query and an AI agent completing a purchase, commerce is quietly being rebuilt. Not through a single breakthrough, but through protocols, trust frameworks, and standards most consumers will never see.
Visa Group president Oliver Jenkyn has been watching this shift from the inside. A year ago, he called the current phase “AI commerce 2.0” — the stage after launch when adoption either compounds or stalls. Twelve months on, the debate has moved from whether AI agents will participate in commerce to how they will authenticate themselves, move money securely, and earn the trust of consumers and merchants.
The Infrastructure Bet
Visa has shipped four major pieces of infrastructure to answer that question. The Trusted Agent Protocol, launched in October 2025, verifies legitimate agents and blocks malicious bots. Intelligent Commerce Connect, unveiled in April 2026, provides a single on-ramp for merchants to accept agent-initiated payments. A strategic partnership with OpenAI, formalized in June 2026, pairs OpenAI’s discovery and ideation strengths with Visa’s money-moving capabilities. And a Large Transaction Model trained on billions of transactions improves fraud detection while increasing authorization performance — a trade-off the industry has struggled with for years.
Two newer tools extend that logic to verification. Agent Score, built with New Generation, gives merchants a report card on whether AI agents can navigate their websites effectively. The Agentic Directory is a vetted list of agents and merchants that each side can treat as legitimate. Jenkyn frames both as foundational rather than experimental.
“Having a way for agents to be validated and entered into a trusted list of ones that you know you can let through and consider valid would be very helpful for the industry,” he told Fast Company. “Having the ability to essentially have a report card of how well agents can navigate their website would also be very valuable.”
Why Trust Matters More Than Speed
Jenkyn draws a sharp dividing line at the consumer checkout. “We think agentic commerce is going to be much more than a checkout,” he said, but the checkout remains the critical moment where trust must be proven.
Visa’s own research finds that consumers trust companies like OpenAI for ideation and discovery, but trust Visa and its ecosystem for moving money. That division of labor is built into the OpenAI partnership: OpenAI handles the front-end intelligence; Visa provides global network, credentialing, and security infrastructure.
The partnership is already moving from agreement to implementation. “It’s an important partnership, and there’s much more to come,” Jenkyn said, keeping the outlook brief but pointed.
The Competitive Landscape Heats Up
Visa is not alone in racing to wire the agent economy. Mastercard launched Agent Pay for Machines in June 2026, a rail for autonomous software to move money at machine speed. A consortium of more than 140 firms — including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Coinbase, and Google — launched OpenUSD, a neutral dollar stablecoin. Stripe built an agent protocol with OpenAI. Google shipped the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) in September 2025 with more than 60 partners.
Interoperability is emerging as the key challenge. Agents do not speak a single language. Purchase intent arrives via multiple protocols — OpenAI’s ACP, Google’s UCP and AP2, Microsoft’s MCP. Nuvei, a payments platform, recently completed Europe’s first fully autonomous agentic transaction and concluded that a “protocol compatibility layer” is needed to translate between standards, so merchants integrate once and accept whichever standard an agent uses.
What B2B Buyers Should Watch
For businesses evaluating their own agentic commerce readiness, three concrete takeaways emerge:

Your website needs an agent score. If AI agents cannot navigate your product pages, pricing, and checkout flow, you lose sales before a human ever sees a cart. Agent Score from Visa and New Generation provides a diagnostic, but any merchant should audit their site for machine readability.

Identity infrastructure is becoming a competitive moat. The Trusted Agent Protocol and Agentic Directory create a credential layer that distinguishes verified agents from bots. Merchants who integrate early with these protocols will have more options for accepting agent-initiated payments, while those who wait may find themselves locked out of certain agent marketplaces.

The protocol war is real, but interoperability middleware is emerging. Adyen’s Agentic suite, Nuvei’s protocol compatibility layer, and similar offerings aim to abstract away the complexity. The smart bet is to monitor which standards gain critical mass, but avoid betting the business on any single one before middleware matures.
Visa has invested more than $13 billion in technology over the past five years to reduce fraud and increase network security. That spending is now being repurposed for a world where the customer isn’t always human. The question is no longer whether agents will shop — it’s whether the pipes we build for them will hold.
